One of my favorite things about working as a photographer is getting to meet the people behind local businesses, creative projects, events, and communities.
Photography is ultimately about people and stories. The same can be said about a great coffee shop, an independent artist, a photographer building their own style, or a creator turning an idea into something tangible.
That's why I'm starting a new series on the Ken Imagery blog: Local Spotlight.
Throughout this series, I'll highlight independent businesses, artists, photographers, makers, musicians, and other creatives that deserve a little more attention.
For Part 1, we're starting with four very different Washington businesses worth checking out.
Caffe Perfetto: Bremerton, Washington
Caffe Perfetto is an independent coffee spot located at 2811 Wheaton Way in Bremerton, making it a great stop for anyone exploring Kitsap County.
Beyond serving coffee, Caffe Perfetto has become connected to the local automotive community. The shop has hosted numerous events, such as the yearly Eggnog mile, and Jeeps & Coffee, a recurring gathering that has brought local vehicle enthusiasts together at the Bremerton location.
That community connection is exactly the type of thing I love seeing from independent businesses. A coffee shop can be more than somewhere to pick up a drink, it can become a place where people connect over shared interests.
Customer reviews also regularly highlight the shop's friendly service and coffee, with customers mentioning drinks ranging from traditional coffee to matcha and Mexican mochas.
Why check them out? Local coffee, a strong neighborhood feel, and connections to the Kitsap community.
E LILY Artistry: Photography, Beauty & Creative Services
E LILY Artistry is a great example.
Primarily working as a natural-light photographer, E LILY offers photography in both indoor and outdoor settings and currently serves the Pierce County, Washington area and Oahu, Hawaii, with travel available by request.
Their photography offerings cover an impressive range of experiences, including:
- Family portraits and headshots
- Pet photography
- Smash-cake and milestone sessions
- Boudoir photography
- Special events and performances
- Branding sessions
- Engagements
- Elopements
- Micro weddings
What especially stands out is how photography connects with E LILY's larger creative ecosystem. Depending on the session, clients can explore additions such as makeup, hair, styling, custom sets, website services, and business cards.
That multidisciplinary approach is something I appreciate as another photographer. A photoshoot isn't always just about producing a technically good photograph. Styling, environment, confidence, storytelling, and the overall client experience can completely change the final result.
E LILY's milestone photography is particularly interesting because the photographer also brings a background in early childhood education, creating a natural connection between working with children and documenting important stages of their lives.
Why check them out? A wide range of photography and creative services with options that can turn a traditional session into a much more customized experience.
Chimeric Creations, LLC: Everett, Washington
Chimeric Creations, LLC, based in Everett, Washington, describes themselves as a home for art centered around transformation, life, healing, and the beauty found in imperfection.
The company brings several creative ventures together under one umbrella:
Captured Chimerism focuses on photography.
Crocheted Chimerism explores handmade fiber work.
S.K. Skin Kare expands the brand into skincare and wellness-oriented products.
It's an interesting model because the individual mediums may be different, but they're connected through a larger creative identity.
As someone who believes photography can overlap with design, marketing, storytelling, fashion, art, and entrepreneurship, I love seeing creators build businesses that don't necessarily fit into one traditional category.
Chimeric Creations demonstrates that your creative identity doesn't have to stop with one medium.
Why check them out? Photography, handmade creativity, skincare, and a distinctive artistic philosophy all living under one independent brand.
GRAVE BRAIN: Independent Art, Apparel & Patches
Then we get to something completely different!
GRAVE BRAIN brings an unmistakably independent visual identity to apparel, patches, stickers, and other creative merchandise.
The current GRAVE BRAIN shop features original items including shirts, patches, back patches, stickers, and other pieces built around its own artwork and characters.
And that's exactly why it belongs in this series.
Independent art doesn't have to live inside a gallery.
It can live on a shirt.
It can become a sticker slapped onto a laptop.
It can become a patch on someone's jacket.
It can become part of someone's personal style.
For photographers and other visual creatives, businesses like GRAVE BRAIN are also a reminder that artwork can move between mediums. An illustration can become merchandise. Merchandise can become part of a portrait. A portrait can become campaign imagery. And all of those things can contribute to a larger creative identity.
If you enjoy alternative artwork, independent merchandise, patches, and supporting artists who aren't trying to look like everyone else, GRAVE BRAIN is worth exploring.
Why check them out? Distinctive independent artwork translated into wearable and collectible pieces.
Why I am Starting This Series
I may be a photography business, but photography has always connected me with a much larger creative community.
I've photographed individuals, couples, events, performers, artists, and businesses, and one thing I've learned is that some of the most interesting work happens when independent creatives support one another.
A photographer needs designers, venues, makeup artists, stylists, musicians, coffee shops, event organizers, small businesses, models, and artists.
Those businesses need photography, video, social content, marketing, websites, events, and communities.
We're all part of the same ecosystem.
The Ken Imagery Local Spotlight series is my way of highlighting some of the people and businesses contributing to it.
This is only Part 1! :D
Future editions will explore more photographers, artists, musicians, wedding professionals, coffee shops, venues, makers, designers, and independent businesses throughout Vancouver, Portland, Kitsap County, the greater Pacific Northwest, and beyond!
