Photography, mixed-media art, tattoos, and creative self-expression in Portland

Sometimes it's captured through a camera. Sometimes it's painted onto a canvas. Sometimes it's permanently turned into artwork someone carries with them for the rest of their life.

For Part 2 of the Ken Imagery Local Spotlight series, we're continuing to celebrate independent artists and small creative businesses—this time focusing on Portland's photography, art, and tattoo communities.

The goal of this series is simple: help more people discover independent creatives and small businesses while strengthening the connections between artists throughout the Pacific Northwest.

For Part 2, meet Madison Seide Studio, Wolf + Shadow Tattoo Collective, and Feverfew Tattoo.

Madison Seide Studio: Photography, Art & Creative Space in Portland

That's one of the things that immediately stands out about Madison Seide Studio!

Madison Seide is a photographer and multidisciplinary artist whose creative background stretches well beyond photography. She has worked as a freelance photographer for more than a decade and studied photography at the Fashion Institute of Technology before earning a bachelor's degree in Studio Art from San Francisco State University. Her work also extends into painting, drawing, digital art, mixed media, resin work, and jewelry.

That multidisciplinary background creates opportunities for photography that can feel more like collaborative art projects than traditional portrait sessions.

Her photography portfolio and session offerings include portraits and headshots, couples and engagements, weddings, boudoir, families, maternity, newborns, seniors and graduates, branding, musicians, events, and custom creative projects.

As another photographer, I especially appreciate Madison's willingness to experiment.

Props, wardrobe, backdrops, unusual concepts, locations, and visual storytelling can transform a portrait from simply documenting someone's appearance into creating something that reflects their personality.

And Madison's creative work is continuing to expand.

A Creative Studio in Southeast Portland

Madison has also established a photography and mixed-media art space in Southeast Portland designed for much more than photography.

The studio can support photography, painting, illustration, classes, events, and other creative uses, with plans for classes and activities for both adults and kids.

Spaces like this matter.

Independent photographers, models, artists, musicians, designers, and other creators often need affordable places where ideas can become actual projects.

Creating a space where multiple artistic communities can overlap helps strengthen Portland's larger creative ecosystem.

Why check Madison out: If you're looking for photography with personality—or you're an artist interested in collaboration, studio space, or multidisciplinary creative work—Madison Seide Studio is worth discovering.

Wolf + Shadow Tattoo Collective

Tattooing might be one of the most personal forms of visual storytelling.

Unlike a photograph hanging on a wall or artwork displayed online, tattoos become part of the person wearing them.

That makes the relationship between artist and client incredibly important.

Wolf + Shadow Tattoo Collective operates studios in Portland and San Diego, but what makes the collective particularly interesting isn't simply the artwork—it's the philosophy behind the business.

Wolf + Shadow describes its approach as deliberately pushing against some of the ego and gatekeeping historically associated with tattoo culture.

Instead, the collective emphasizes artists who value kindness, diversity, individuality, and self-expression.

That's a philosophy worth highlighting.

Tattoos as Collaboration

Finding the right tattoo artist isn't necessarily about finding the artist with the largest following.

It's about finding someone whose artistic style connects with your idea.

Wolf + Shadow brings together tattoo artists with different artistic backgrounds and perspectives, allowing clients to explore portfolios and find someone whose work fits what they're imagining.

One Portland artist, Mercy Dean, for example, came into tattooing with a background in graphic design and a lifelong interest in drawing.

That crossover between tattooing, illustration, graphic design, photography, fashion, and other visual mediums is part of what makes creative communities interesting.

Different mediums influence each other.

A photograph can inspire an illustration.

An illustration can become a tattoo.

A tattoo can become part of someone's portrait.

And all of them become ways of telling a story.

Supporting Independent Tattoo Artists

Wolf + Shadow also describes itself specifically as a tattoo collective because the artists are central to the identity of the studio.

That distinction matters.

Supporting an independent tattoo studio ultimately means supporting working artists who have spent years developing their craft.

Why check them out: A collective focused on tattoos, individuality, collaboration, kindness, and creating a welcoming environment around permanent art.

Feverfew Tattoo: Check them out!

Feverfew Tattoo is exactly the type of creative business I would want to promote!

Tattoo artists occupy an interesting space in the broader art world:

From illustrators, to designers.

They're collaborators, and storytellers.

But instead of producing something destined primarily for a screen, print, or gallery wall, they're creating artwork specifically for another person.

That makes choosing an artist an incredibly personal decision.

Rather than choosing a tattoo shop solely because it's nearby, spend time exploring individual artists and their portfolios. Look at composition, linework, subject matter, recurring imagery, and the overall personality behind their work.

Most importantly, find the artist whose visual language connects with you.

That's why independent artists are worth following even before you're ready to book anything.

Following their work gives you time to understand their style, discover available designs, and eventually approach them with an idea that fits both your personality and their artistic strengths.

Why check them out: If you're exploring Portland's independent tattoo and art community—or simply looking for inspiration for a future piece—add Feverfew Tattoo to your list of local creatives to follow.

Photography and Tattoos Have More in Common Than You Might Think!

Photography and tattooing may seem like completely different industries.

But creatively, they have quite a bit in common.

Both require understanding composition.

Both use light, shadow, shape, texture, contrast, and color.

Both require technical ability—but technical ability alone doesn't create memorable artwork.

And most importantly, both are collaborative.

When someone steps in front of my camera, I'm not simply photographing what they look like.

We're creating something together.

The location matters.

The wardrobe matters.

The lighting matters.

Their personality matters.

Their tattoos, jewelry, hairstyle, fashion, makeup, and other forms of self-expression can all become part of the final image.

That's one reason tattoo artists, photographers, designers, stylists, models, musicians, and other creatives benefit when our communities overlap.

The Bigger Goal: Build a Stronger PNW Creative Community

The Ken Imagery Local Spotlight isn't meant to become another generic "best businesses in Portland" list.

I want this series to introduce people to the actual humans creating things around us.

The photographers building studios.

The tattoo artists developing recognizable styles.

The painters experimenting with new mediums.

The musicians playing local venues.

The designers launching independent brands.

The coffee shops hosting community gatherings.

The wedding professionals helping couples create something memorable.

And the countless other small businesses that make Vancouver, Portland, Kitsap County, and the greater Pacific Northwest more interesting places to live and create.

Supporting them doesn't always require spending money, either.

Follow their work.

Share their posts.

Recommend them to a friend.

Attend their events.

Leave thoughtful reviews.

Hire them when you need their services.

And when possible, collaborate.

Creative communities become stronger when we stop treating every other artist as competition and start looking for opportunities to create something together.
